On relief by this battalion the & Cos. of the Middlesex Regt now, in North China will join the battalion headquarter in tong Kong, where they shouts arrive about the beginning of February 1908.

Owing to the exigencies of the troopship programme (with which colonel Callweld was unfortunately not familiar when he promised the troops by next September) the W.0. cannot, I fear. expedite this movement.

I must apologise for the delay there has been in send- ing over the letter about the British infantry at Hong Kong, after I had told you at the Colonial Defence Committee meet- ing early in the month that the letter had actually gone or was in transit. I feel to blame in the matter for making no enquiries afterwards whether the letter had gone, and for only finding out two days ago that it had been delayed. A financial controversy arose on the papers, which did not however affect the question that a regiment had got to go, and in the meantime the letter remained unsigned.

The wording of the letter has been slightly modified

as regards the time of the regiment going, from what I told

you at the C.D.C. meeting.

If Sir E. Grey does not allow us to withdraw one of the

native regiments from North China we shall be in serious

difficulties, because there is not accommodation for an
